Manual vs pneumatic underpinners: which fits your shop?
Both manual and pneumatic underpinners can produce strong, clean corners. The right choice depends on the work surrounding the machine.

Where manual equipment makes sense
A manual underpinner can suit lower-volume production, varied custom work and workshops where simplicity or a small footprint is important. The operator has direct control over each cycle and the equipment does not depend on a compressed-air system.
The trade-off is physical effort and cycle consistency over long batches. As volume grows, operator fatigue can affect pace, especially on dense mouldings or jobs requiring several fasteners per corner.
Where pneumatic assistance helps
Pneumatic operation can reduce repeated effort and support a more consistent rhythm in medium- and higher-volume work. Clamping and driving actions can become easier to repeat when the machine, pressure and tooling are set correctly.
The workshop must provide suitable compressed air and maintain hoses, preparation equipment and pressure settings. Faster cycling also makes organised component flow and operator training more important.
Compare the frames, not the labels
Test the profiles you actually use: narrow and wide, soft and dense, flat and shaped. Assess face alignment, corner closure, fastener position and the operator's ability to control the moulding without marking it.
Consider how frequently settings change. A custom shop may value quick adjustment across varied work, while a production shop may prioritise repeatability through a long run.
Choose around the next realistic stage
Buy for the volume you can reasonably expect, not an imagined maximum that may never arrive. Include the cost of utilities, maintenance, consumables, training and floor space in the comparison.
A useful trial should reproduce your normal working conditions. Bring sample mouldings and discuss the full cut-to-join process before deciding.
